to go in different direction. the unfortunate and very tragic incident in connecticut in sandy hook elementary school of course heightened everybody's awareness of what violence can really be all about. and as we have been not only responding, reacting to this national tragedy that i think president obama has adequately described as broken all of our hearts, and in every funeral that has taken place, for those 20 innocent children and six innocent adults in the school districts, and school administrators, we obviously have shared in that very tragic event, all of us. it has touched everybody across this country. san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something ab

the nation's biggest source of greenhouse gas pollution which is our power plants. hurricane sandy wasn't caused by climate change but made worse by climate change. the surge here in new york was higher because the oceans are higher. the winds of the hurricane were speedier because the oceans are warmer. so we've got to attack power plants and reduce the carbon pollution from them, which not only causes climate change but also things like asthma and cancer. we also have to attack fossil fuel subsidies, in my view, subsidies for the fossil fuel industry now outweigh renewal subsidies by 75-1. we've got to level the playing field so clean energy has a chance to compete. in the meantime, we've also got to increase r&d for clean energy and preserve the limited subsidies that we do have such as the production tax credit for wind power. i also predict that 2013 will be the year when we begin to finally modernize our electric grid which is incredibly antiquated. we saw again in hurricane sandy that a few places in new york city like co-op city, were able to become islands of power and keep the

things forward. i think it's really remarkable and i think we all now recognize with hurricane sandy, with the inclement weather and the winter we're having now that climate change and renewable power and local energy provision is paramount and we need to main ain and amplify that commitment as a city. i also continue to have my eye on the prize of the local build out and the promise of that because i think not only is the job opportunity great, and all kinds of implications around work force training and at the local level and diversify that source and needs to be local and hurricane sandy has shown us that. that if there were nor localized power 4,000 people wouldn't be out of power right now so i am supportive of moving forward as quickly as possible with the education and outreach that needs to happen. i also concur with president torres and this is organic and evolving and this financing piece is really an important discussion to have and i would welcome having that with the lafco to talk about if the possibility of local build out over this four year contract could reduce th

long. no sooner did northeast republicans excoriate their brethern in congress for not passing a sandy storm relief bill than the house turned around and passed the bill. the near $10-billion measure was quickly passed in the house on friday and cleared the senate by unanimous consent. the 67 who voted no were all republicans. they had insisted that the aid be paid for by cuts in other federal programs. this was the first and least controversal part of a larger aid package to be considered in a couple of weeks. the fda is setting forth new rules that put the onus for food safety on food producers. about 3,000 americans die each year due to food-borne illnesses, and the new rules aim to make food processors and farms more accountable for reducing that number. companies will have to establish specific plans for preventing contamination as well as keep records that show they are doing so. the new rules are a result of the food safety and modernization act that was signed into law in 2011. still to come, more people are finding jobs. is it time to book a vacation? we'll give you some value

-- not just for the usa, but for planet earth. that's the message delivered by hurricane sandy, and by almost all the extreme weather of the past two years. and here in the first month of the new year, it's the message from the most informed scientists in the world. they're scared, for real. and they say that unless we slow the release of global emissions from fossil fuels, slow it enough to keep the planet's temperature from rising by two degrees celsius, or 3.6 degrees fahrenheit, the earth's polar ice sheets will melt away -- with catastrophic consequences. time's running out. not one, but two major scientific reports in the last few weeks have concluded that the rapid increase in fossil fuel emissions makes that increase of two degrees celsius all but inevitable. this headline in the "national journal" spells it out.
